Our pearl culture farm is located in Liusha Port in the Beibu Gulf in Chinese sea area, which is well known as ¡°the first pearl village in China? There is the best sea area most suitable for culturing sea water pearls in that place, with long and gentle coastal line, clean and non-polluted sea water, proper water temperature, rich seabed microorganisms and minerals, and right salinity, suitable for the culture and growth of Pteria martensii. It has been the place of origin for southern pearls of China since ancient time, and pearls we breed are famous for their crystal-clearness, smoothness and perfect roundness.

We have the following pearl culturing procedures: spat raising-breeding pearl-implanting oyster core implanting-pearl breeding-harvest.

 1. Breeding of pearl oyster

Natural spats are getting fewer and fewer, and artificial spat raising must be used for breeding. Artificial spat culture is a complicated process involved with high technology, roughly with the processes as follows:

Sex identification of parent mussel--selection of parent mussel--proliferation of parent mussel--inspection of spat--selection -- selection and breeding of host mussel --spat collection--spat separation--young mussel management--harvest and transportation of young mussel

Then breeding of spats is followed, and it takes about two years from spats to pearl core implanting oyster.

2. Manual core implanting into pearl oyster

When pearl oyster reaches the stage of pearl core planting oyster, manual core plantation can be conducted if weather and water temperature are right. Generally, time for core plantation in our farm is from the end of March to the end of May, and from mid-September to the end of October. However, mussels for core implanting in spring are generally better in quality, as the wounds after operation heal more quickly, and the surviving rate is higher, and the life of platelets is stronger. We usually conduct core implantation in spring, with autumn core implantation as supplementary.

Core implantation process includes inspection of mussels operated on, cutting, passage clearing, core delivering and platelet delivering, etc. Re-inspect after core implantation, then the operation is completed. Then remove the mussels operated on, take wood stoppers out, put them in containers with fresh seawater, and transfer them to resting tanks for rest.

3. Picking-up of pearls

Pearl raising period follows core implantation. The length of pearl raising time depends on farming condition, pearl raising method and requirements for pearl quality (mainly thickness).

At present, pearl raising time for Pteria martensii is generally 11 months to 18 months. The best picking-up date for pearls is generally November to February next year. Our staff has decades of pearl farming experiences, and they usually collect the best pearls at the best date.

Before picking-up, we will take samples for inspection. Only the minimum thickness of pearl layers required by international pearl convention is reached, can we decide to harvest.

The thickness standard of pearl layer required by international pearl convention:

Fine pearl: pearl diameter 2.6--4.9mm thickness of tegument 0.3mm

Small pearl: pearl diameter: 5.0--6.4mm thickness of tegument 0.5mm

Medium pearl: pearl diameter: 6.5--7.9mm thickness of tegument: 0.8mm

Big pearl: pearl diameter over 0.8mm thickness of tegument 1.0mm
